American Red Cross Parent & Child Aquatics Programs
The American Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatics Program helps young children (aged 6 months through 5 years) become comfortable in and around the water, so they are ready to learn to swim. It is not designed to teach children to become good swimmers nor to survive in the water on their own. Parents will receive information and learn techniques that will help them orient their child to the water and help them supervise water activities in a safe manner.
Level A Prerequisite: 6 months
Children 6 months to 2 years old; either no water experience or one previous session of water adjustment lessons
Level B Prerequisite: 18 mos/Level A
Children 18 months to 4 years old, two or more previous sessions of water adjustment lessons, submerge only reluctantly (or not at all) or require flotation support at all times or may benefit from parental presence and support in the water.
Class size: No more than 10 parent-child pairs to one instructor
Course length: Nice 20-minute sessions three times per week
Water Temperature: 83°F (ARC recommendations states 82°F minimum)
